Editor, Commonwealth:
For many years, Mississippi Valley State University has had different presidents to lead the university. As for this year, the best decision was made by choosing Dr. Jerryl Briggs as the eighth president of the university.
Before being named president, Dr. Briggs served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at the university.
Dr. Briggs earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Xavier University, a master’s degree from Louisiana Tech and a doctorate degree from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. While serving at MVSU, Dr. Briggs has helped to improve the university’s retention rate by 10 percent, and he has also worked with other staff to help increase the enrollment rate.
Before joining “The Valley Family,” Dr. Briggs has had other professional experiences. He served as vice president of student affairs at Central State University and Lincoln University. He has also held other positions at Clark Atlanta University, Georgia Institute of Technology and several other universities.
On behalf of the students, faculty and alumni, we would like to wish Dr. Briggs a successful school year.
