Editor, Commonwealth:
If you are worried about the high rate of school absenteeism at Greenwood High School, it’s not that bad. Excused absences and unexcused absences as well as suspensions count as absent. Add all three together, it comes to 41 percent of students absent 10 percent or more of the school year.
We want all of our students to have a perfect or very good attendance record. A good attendance record means good grades.
If parents would make their kids’ doctor’s and dentist’s appointments in the afternoon, then their kids would be in school most of the day and they would be marked as present.
Parents will hear more about this matter soon from Dr. Jennifer Wilson, Greenwood school superintendent, as well as from Anjuan Brown, assistant to the superintendent in the Carroll County School District. Dr. Wilson will also be using software and apps to keep our parents informed.
Also let’s keep in mind what our superintendent says. In order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and the school.
