To win the statewide Wendy’s High School Heisman would be a rarity for a student-athlete from the Delta. To win the national honor is off-the-charts incredible.
We’re excited for Sunjay Chawla, the Pillow Academy senior who has been chosen this year to receive the top U.S. award for male student-athletes, and the trip next month to New York and the $5,000 college scholarship that goes with it.
We’re also excited for his parents and other family members, for his teachers, coaches and other mentors, and for his teammates and classmates. All have played a part in helping Chawla take his God-given talents and develop them into the well-rounded and accomplished athlete and student that he is.
Chawla has excelled on the tennis court, with four straight state singles titles, and on the soccer pitch, playing on one state championship team and one runner-up. He is one of his school’s top students, has scored 34 out of a possible 36 on the ACT college entrance exam, and will have his choice of colleges to attend next fall. He’s also found time for community service, starting as an Eagle Scout when he was younger to more recently launching a program at Greenwood High School to help students there achieve better scores on the ACT.
Chawla is a special young man. This community can take pride in whatever part it played in helping to shape him.
