After last week’s inept handling of the firing of FBI Director James Comey, President Donald Trump has threatened to cancel all press briefings.
He is unlikely to do it. The president likes the attention too much.
But if he did, the biggest losers would not be the members of the Washington press corps. They know that, in the era of Trump, there’s not a lot of reliable information that comes out of these briefings, and the administration’s official version is likely to change anyway several times before they have time to file the story.
The biggest losers would be the comics, such as the crew on Saturday Night Live, which has had a blast poking fun at Press Secretary Sean Spicer ever since he started the hapless job of trying to explain what his erratic boss was doing.
Their writers might have to work a little harder if the administration stopped giving them so much wacky material.
