After decades of talking about consolidating the Greenwood and Leflore County public schools, the sensible idea has one last hurdle to overcome: the last-ditch effort by state Rep. Willie Perkins to defeat a legislatively mandated merger.
The Greenwood Democrat, after the House voted by an almost 2-to-1 margin Tuesday to approve the consolidation, filed a motion to reconsider.
This means the House must take another vote to table that motion or the bill will die.
Perkins acknowledges, however, that his opposition is unlikely to be successful. Thank goodness.
If any place needs consolidation, this county does. With declining enrollments and one district taken over by the state, merging the two districts will save money and provide better opportunities for students.
The bill gives local school officials three years to implement the merger. That’s more than enough time.
