Time is winding down, and my belongings are being packed up. It’s hard to believe that the wedding is just six weeks away.
It’s crunch time. We are finalizing all the details — cake, flowers, photographer, reception, food, hair and makeup, clothes and decorations, not to mention the rings — in preparation of our big day.
Then of course, there is the big move the week before the wedding. I am already tired just thinking about it. Remember, I have done this a few times in the past 10 years, and it never gets any easier to move. At least this time I will have my groom-to-be to help, and I will be going to our home in Maryland.
With all these final details to handle, the stress level is at an all-time high. My mind is on overload, and it’s hard to concentrate on anything but the upcoming events.
But this weekend, I am packing a bag and heading home to Alabama. My friends, former classmates, family, members of the Gordo community and my home church are giving David and I two showers — one on Saturday and another on Sunday. I have such a big family and a large group of friends back home that they decided to split it into two events.
David and I appreciate everything all these wonderful people are doing for us, and it will be good to see some old friends and family members I haven’t seen in quite some time. David won’t be able to attend this weekend, but he will be there with me in spirit.
Just a couple of weeks ago, a dear friend gave David and me a His and Hers Shower. It was beautiful.
She had help with the cake, which was gorgeous and delicious, from one of her colleagues at work. These are some very talented ladies.
The decorations for the shower were beautiful, and the atmosphere was festive. David and I loved it.
My biggest surprise at the shower, however, was one of the couples who attended. When I lived in Kosciusko in 1998, I went to church with H.T. and Mary Green, and I had lunch each Sunday with most of the Green family. I came to know H.T. and Mary through Nancy Green, who is the lifestyles editor at the Star-Herald. She is one of my dearest friends, and she and her husband’s family adopted me right away when I moved there.
When I was compiling a list of addresses to give Debbie for the shower, I added all the Greens to the list for this particular shower since it included many of the folks I work with or have worked with in the past. I really wasn’t sure if they could come or would even want to drive that far for a shower. But, I wanted them to know I was getting married and give them an opportunity to meet David.
So when David and I drove up that Sunday afternoon, I was so excited to see that the Greens had made the trip to Greenwood. They are such special people, and it meant so much for them to be there. Miss Nancy couldn’t attend because she was recovering from a fall, which I completely understood, but she was greatly missed.
As I prepare for this weekend’s festivities, I wonder what other surprises are in store. It is always good to reconnect with people who have meant so much to you throughout your life.
I have been overwhelmed by those who have been so kind during this special time in my life, and those acts of kindness and giving have not gone unnoticed.
Just pray that I can keep my sanity until Dec. 5. I know it will be a very special day, and everything will come together for a beautiful ceremony.
