The staff at the Commonwealth is breathing a collective sigh of relief as the 2008 Profile edition is now complete and will be delivered to our readers on Thursday.
I have already seen a sample of the edition, and I am anxious to see the reaction from the community.
I guess I am a little biased, but I think the edition is wonderful, and many months of hard work by the entire Commonwealth staff have paid off in what I hope will be one of the best Profile editions ever to be produced at the newspaper.
Please mark your calendars and be sure to pick up some extra copies on Thursday.
The edition is chock full of stories about interesting people, places and businesses in Leflore County and the surrounding area. And, as always, it will feature the 2008 Community Service Award winner.
After completing work on the Profile edition last week, I took Friday off and enjoyed a three-day weekend to recoup the creative juices.
That deadline pressure of getting out such a big project had me a little frazzled.
I told everyone I was just going to stay at home and chill out – no driving to Alabama or getting involved in a big weekend of activities.
The biggest thing I had planned to do was get a much-needed hair cut.
But our city editor, David Monroe, who knows me all too well, just shook his head and told me that wasn’t going to happen.
I’m known to be a workaholic by some people’s standards, and it is difficult for me to just sit down and rest.
I’ve been told I clean up for the burglars when I prepare to go home to Alabama for a weekend. But I can’t stand to come home to a dirty house.
While I did get some much-needed rest last weekend, I also cleaned house and continued the chore of going through storage tubs that have yet to be unpacked since moving back to Greenwood almost six months ago.
There’s never rest for the weary, especially those of us who don’t know when to quit.
My chiropractor fussed at me as well. She told me to go home, not drive to Alabama, and just relax and give my back a rest.
I think that bending and unloading heavy tubs probably didn’t fit into that category.
I must admit that I came back to work on Monday with a little more pep in my step and ready to move on to the next project. There were a couple of things waiting on my desk.
Entries for another newspaper contest went out on Tuesday, and the Commonwealth began making plans for the next installment of our magazine, Leflore Illustrated, which will be published in late April.
With the brainstorming session complete, I am sure our readers will be pleased with the story selections for the spring edition of the magazine.
While working under deadline pressure every day can be a little taxing on the body, it is always rewarding to sit back and see projects such as our yearly Profile edition and biannual magazines come to fruition. It is something our staff and our community can take pride in because Greenwood and Leflore County are great places to call home, and we want to share their wonderful stories with everyone.
