WINONA — Last Monday night, as firefighters from six counties, with assistance from Winona street and water department personnel, battled the fire that destroyed te SuperValu grocery store in Winona, it was never more evident that this community is very special.
As firefighters fought the enormous blaze and the sweltering hot temperatures, many suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration. Paramedics were on the scene to treat those affected, and thankfully, no firefighter became seriously ill from the elements.
Winona’s citizens and local businesses were invaluable to the first responders at the scene.
Reporting from the scene last Monday night, we witnessed so many little acts of kindness by citizens showing their support and appreciation to this area’s first responders. Many local citizens and businesses went above and beyond to ensure the well-being of the firefighters. For those who brought water, sports drinks, and ice to the fire scene, as well as provided cold rags, fans, food and other aid to the exhausted men who battled the blaze for six hours or more, we salute you for your efforts.
As Mayor Jerry Flowers said last Tuesday night, that kind of love and support is what makes Winona and the surrounding communities a wonderful place to call home.
We also want to offer a special thanks to Duck Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department, Poplar Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Carrollton/North Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, Elliott Volunteer Fire Department, Greenwood Fire Department, Leflore County volunteers, Mathiston Fire Department and Tomnolen Fire Department for assisting the Winona Fire Department.
