North New Summit School administrators confirmed that their teachers have been laid off as they continue to search for a buyer, administrators wrote in an email to parents Wednesday evening.
“While we are still pursuing all possibilities for a sale or transition of the school to new ownership, these discussions are ongoing,” the email from school officials said. “We simply cannot assure you at this time that NNSS will be open in the fall.”
The school system has been facing serious financial uncertainty after Greenwood native Nancy New and her son, Zachary, were indicted on federal fraud charges in March. The indictment accused their company, New Learning Resources Inc., of fraudulently obtaining more than $2 million from the state from 2017 to 2020.
The federal indictments were issued more than a year after State Auditor Shad White implicated the News in a widespread conspiracy related to misspending of money in the Mississippi Department of Human Services.
Two weeks ago, Mississippi Today reported that teachers at New Summit School in Jackson had not received their May paychecks.
With the status of the school still up in the air, questions remain for hundreds of students. Parents say there isn’t a viable alternative to North New Summit’s small class sizes and special-ed curriculum within at least an hour of Greenwood.
