- The Greenwood Rotary Club has selected Amari Johnson of Greenwood High School and Sarah Frances O’Brien of Pillow Academy as Students of the Month for December.
Johnson is the daughter of Tamnral Johnson-Rice and Cary Weaver, both of Greenwood. She plans to attend a still-to-be-determined historically Black college or university and major in biology pre-medicine. O’Brien is the daughter of Trey and Elizabeth O’Brien of Greenwood. She plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in business.
- Caroline Makamson of Morgan City and Tracey DuBard of Carrollton, both students at Mississippi State University, recently recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
They are among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership.
- John Tackett of Greenwood, an engineering major at the University of Mississippi, has been accepted to medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center through the Early Decision Program.
Students who apply to the Early Decision Program for medical school commit to applying to only one school until they hear back. In return for this commitment, they have the opportunity to secure a place in a medical school class earlier in the process than is typical. To be eligible to apply for the program, students often must meet GPA and/or MCAT scores set by the school to which they are applying and be exceptionally strong in community service, clinical and/or leadership experiences and during interviews with medical school officials.
