Organizers for Friday’s Stars and Stripes in the Park festival and fireworks show hope the rain holds off until after the festivities, but crowd-goers should expect heat and humidity.
“It is definitely going to be another hot year for the fireworks,” said Beth Stevens, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.
From ice cold lemonade to refreshing snow cones, the annual event held at Whittington Park will have plenty of drinks and treats to help everyone stay cool as well as cookout favorites such as barbecue and hamburgers.
The musical entertainment will begin at 5:30 p.m. and last until right before the fireworks show at 9 p.m. There will also be games and activities throughout the evening for the children.
Stevens said the event is an opportunity to enjoy free fun in a family-friendly environment.
“People are always going other places to do things and have fun,” said Stevens. “This is a chance to stay at home and have a good time in our community. We have something for everyone.”
Major sponsors for Stars and Stripes in the Park are the City of Greenwood, Leflore County, Greenwood Utilities, Viking Range Corp., Johnson-McAdams Firm, J.J. Ferguson, Scott Petroleum and Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
