The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has lifted its 4-month-old water contact advisory for a portion of the Tallahatchie River and the Yazoo River.
The department issued the advisory Feb. 21, warning people to avoid contact with the Tallahatchie from Money Road and the northern section of Grand Boulevard all the way downstream on the Yazoo to the Roebuck Road bridge in the southern part of the Rising Sun community.
The advisory was prompted by the collapse of a Greenwood wastewater line across the levee along the 600 block of East Claiborne Avenue.
The collapse allowed sewage to enter the river, according to the department. It also created a large cave-in between the levee and the river.
Eddie Curry, the director of the city’s wastewater division, said earlier this month that the city was able to repair the line and plug the hole.
