Volunteers are needed to help clean up Baptist Town on Saturday in preparation for an annual festival next week.
The clean-up day, now in its sixth year, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.
The fourth annual Baptist Town Community and Kids Day Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 25.
The cleanup is staffed entirely by volunteers, said Alice Leflore, president of Baptist Town Community Development.
“We generally hold a community clean-up day twice a year — once in the spring and once in the fall,” Leflore said. “It’s to promote neighborhood cleanliness.”
Participants are encouraged to clean their own properties and then move on toward the community’s primary streets as team members. Street captains and some team members for Avenue A and Walker, McNeill and McCain streets have already been selected.
Captains and teams are still needed for Stephens Avenue and Short, Young and Pelican streets, Leflore said.
In addition to street captains, it is hoped that each street will have a team of three volunteers to work on Saturday, Leflore said.
Everyone is welcome, and “they do not have to be residents to serve,” she said.
Leflore said she’s especially hopeful that students from Mississippi Valley State University — who need 60 hours of community service to graduate — will take part.
The Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce has supplied trash bags and work gloves.
Leflore said those interested in volunteering may call her at 392-0528.
On Monday, the Leflore County Board of Supervisors tabled a motion to provide funds to promote the annual festival.
