Making sure that veterans get the medical and other services that they are entitled to is the goal of a town hall meeting Saturday featuring U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson.
The event, hosted by American Legion Post 200, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mississippi National Guard Armory, 1102 Sycamore St.
The meeting, which has been held for each of the past five years, draws between 250 and 300 veterans, said Robert Beasley, the post’s public relations officer.
Beasley also serves as a veterans resource coordinator with Americorps.
Also scheduled to attend are Dr. David M. Walker, director of the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, and Darryl Brady, director of the Department of the Veterans Affairs’ regional office in Jackson.
Beasley said Thompson, Walker and Brady will be available to take questions from veterans and their families. The medical center’s Rural Health Outreach Team and Mobile Health Clinic will be also be on hand Saturday.
Beasley said it is important for all veterans to bring their DD Form 214s — their official Department of Defense discharge documents — to the meeting.
Beasley said the town halls typically draw veterans from all over the Delta. Bringing the medical center and VA staff to Greenwood allows veterans who cannot drive to Jackson the opportunity to get answers to questions, he said.
