Records show an Itta Bena donor’s contributions to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign — which make him Trump’s largest individual contributor in the state — exceed the total allowed by federal law, but the donor attributes the overpayment to a glitch.
According to a listing of individual donors on the Federal Election Commission’s website, Noel Barrett of America’s Catch contributed $10,800 to the Republican’s campaign, and his wife, Liz, gave $5,400. Liz Barrett’s total is second-highest on the list.
The maximum contribution allowed is $2,700 each for each election held or to be held, including primaries, runoffs and general elections. In the case of this year’s presidential election, the maximum contribution allowed from an individual is $5,400 unless there’s a runoff.
Barrett said an error involving his credit card company, American Express, or some other error likely produced his $10,800 total. He said he and his wife each intended to give the maximum, so assuming they take back their overpaymnent, they’ll give a total of $10,800.
Campaigns are responsible for correcting such errors by refunding the amounts beyond the individual donation limit.
According to the website, David Grossman of D&T Farms in Itta Bena also gave $1,000 to Trump. Four donors from Greenwood contributed a total of $733: Jim Tackett and Bob Provine, $250 each; Vikki Wade, $200; and Charlot Ray, $33.
The website lists no contributions from anyone in Leflore or Carroll County to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
