Greenwood experienced a few hiccups this morning as voters took to the polls to cast ballots for mayor and one City Council race.
“There’s been a little bit of that,” said City Clerk Nick Joseph.
Most of the confusion centered on North Greenwood, where voting lines were changed prior to the 2013 election that moved some residents from Ward 1 to Ward 3.
Ward 3 Councilman Ronnie Stevenson, the council’s president, said if there was some confusion, it was minor. “I think there were a few incidents. We redistricted over four years ago. ... This is the second go-round,” Stevenson said.
The ward lines can be tricky, he said. For example, one side of Montgomery Street is in Ward 3 and the other in Ward 1.
“You have to know your lines,” Stevenson said.
Compounding the confusion, Joseph said, is that county and city elections are often held in different precinct locations.
Overall, Joseph said, there had been only a few minor technical glitches with voting machines this morning.
In the mayor’s race, two-term incumbent Carolyn McAdams is being challenged by Democrat Kenderick Cox and independent Shun Pearson. The only contested council race is in Ward 6, where incumbent David Jordan is being challenged for the third straight election by Larry “Blue” Neal, an independent.
Today’s rainy weather could depress voter turnout, Joseph said.
Polls will be open until 7 p.m. Among the other local municipalities holding elections are Itta Bena, North Carrollton and Vaiden.
