The Greenwood City Council unanimously approved teacher Samantha Milton on Tuesday to fill a vacancy on the city’s Election Commission.
Milton was confirmed in a three-minute-long special called meeting by a 6-0 vote. All council members were present for the vote except Ward 5’s Tennill Cannon, who arrived late.
Milton will replace Shirley Cooper, who resigned from the post because her husband, Marcus, was running for the Ward 4 City Council seat. Marcus Cooper was defeated by incumbent Charles McCoy in the May 7 Democratic primary.
Milton was unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting because she teaches in the Leflore County School District and had to be in class. She teaches social studies and special education at the alternative school.
The new election commissioner said Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams asked her to replace Cooper, and she gladly agreed to serve. She said she is looking forward to the post and went to her first training session Tuesday evening.
The other two commissioners are Tish Goodman and Vallrie Dorsey. Leflore County District 1 Election Commissioner Deveda Dillon will serve as a technical adviser to the city commission for Tuesday’s general election.
In 2010, McAdams nominated Milton to serve a five-year term on the Greenwood School Board to replace then-President Margaret Clark, whose term was expiring. The City Council rejected that appointment, though they approved Milton quickly this time.
