The Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production will hold a field day in Greenwood on Friday.
The event will be hosted at Levee Run Farm, 802 Grenada Blvd. Extended.
Participants must pre-register.
Check-in begins at 10 a.m. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. and concludes at 2:30 p.m.
“The Alliance was started by a group of small farmers in Holmes County. They wanted to grow sustainably. ... It’s really for farmers, gardeners and growers,” said Keith Benson, the Alliance’s founding director.
The Alliance, which is based in Holmes County, completed its 56th field day — the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Field Day — on May 9, he said. “Every third Friday we’re doing a field day somewhere.”
Benson said this is the second consecutive field day held at Levee Run Farm, which is owned by Leann Hines.
The field day will cover composting and trellising crops as well as ways to control insects and disease.
Attendees will also learn about Levee Run’s vegetables, flowers, fruit trees, high tunnels and pastured poultry, Benson said.
In all, he said, five or six major topics will be discussed, some of which will focus on the strength of the whole farm.
“It’s really an effort of farmers and growers working together,” with the focus being on small to mid-size farms, Benson said.
“Growers and farmers need this information so bad. A lot of people just don’t know about it,” he said.
Alliance field day partners and sponsors include the Mississippi State Extension Service, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Alcorn State University Extension Program, the University of Mississippi Transactional Law Clinic, the National Center for Appropriate Technology, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and the Mississippi Department of Education.
