Almost a week ago, motorists travelling down West Park Avenue were greeted with gridlock as crews began repaving near the intersection with the U.S. 82-49 bypass.
By Friday, the work was done, including the planned striping of West Park Avenue, the heaviest- traveled stretch of roadway in the city.
“I was just amazed that they could do the striping in addition to the overlaying. ... It was a hassle but it got done. People are just tickled pink,” said Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams.
The work, done by J.C. Cheek Contractors Inc. of Kosciusko, is part of extensive road repairs in the city, also included the milling and overlaying of sections of Grand Boulevard.
“The good weather helped,” McAdams said.
This week, work will begin on Robert E. Lee Drive, where milling of the roadway and overlaying are scheduled, the mayor said.
Weather permitting, the work on Robert E. Lee should be completed by the end of this week.
Other significant road work projects in the city include two more blocks of overlaying on Fulton Street as well as some overlaying on Cotton Street directly in front of Davis Elementary School, McAdams said.
Some $1.13 million in planned road improvements throughout the city were approved by the Greenwood City Council in 2014
The mayor said that street work is expected to resume once weather permits.
McAdams said as the headache of work on West Park Avenue passed and visible improvements were made, the mood of motorists and residents seemed to change as well.
“One day, you’re heavily criticized and the next, you’re heavily praised,” she said.
