A series of strong thunderstorms moved through Leflore County early this morning toppling trees and causing power outtages throughout Greenwood.
“There was a complex of showers that came through. We did get some reports of power down in the city. It looks like our report came in at 5:30 a.m.,” said Joanne Culin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson.
Benny Herring, director of the Greenwood Public Works Department, said his crews were out as early as 5 a.m. removing trees that had fallen down in roadways as well as making sure the city’s storm drains remained clear.
By 8:30 a.m. today most of his crews were heading in, Herring said.
“They did an outstanding job,” he said.
At the same time, Jesse Ross, vice president of distribution and engineering with Greenwood Utilities, said the company’s crews were still out restoring power in limited parts of the city.
Areas affected by downed trees included Main Street and Martin Luther King Drive, the area near Crockett Avenue and Weightman Street, the 1400-block of Grand Boulevard, Bell and Strong avenues and Poplar Street, he said.
Ross said he expected power to be restored by noon today.
While the system that came through has moved south, Culin said, there is a chance of more showers this afternoon courtesy of a front moving through Arkansas.
