VAIDEN — Mississippi’s veterans affairs officials would like to put a cemetery in Carroll County dedicated to veterans and their spouses and children, county supervisors were told Monday.
Harvey Overstreet, Montgomery County veterans representative, said the state is looking for someone to donate 40 to 50 acres of land for the purpose.
Chancery Clerk Sugar Mullins said he has worked on the possibility along with his brother, Buster Mullins, who is Carroll County’s veterans representative. Sugar Mullins said there had been difficulty getting anyone to donate land for the purpose of a cemetery.
Overstreet said the project could bring about $4 million to the county.
Also Monday, the supervisors:
• Received updated and finalized maps of new district lines drawn by the Stennis Institute at Mississippi State University for the county. The lines were changed due to changes in population after the 10-year census was reported.
• Voted to pay Circuit Clerk Durward Stanton $2,200 for extra work he has done in working with The Stennis Institute and notifying residents of newly drawn lines. On a motion by Rickie Corley, with a second by Marvin Coward, the vote was 5-0.
• Voted to give employees an opportunity to join LegalShield, a legal insurance that gives the employee access to an attorney when needed at a cost of $25 per month. Terry Herbert, Corley and Claude Fluker voted to allow the employees to choose the plan, and Coward and Honey Ashmore voted against it.
• Approved donations of $2,000 to the American Red Cross, $5,000 to the town of Carrollton for the community house and $1,000 to the Carroll Pilgrimage.
• Purchased advertising in an annual magazine published by the Carrollton Conservative for $2,000.
• Approved the settlement of the county in taking land by eminent domain; the county will pay $2,000 to David Holman.
