Area school districts are working to address missed school days caused by recent snow and sleet.
In the Greenwood district, which has missed four days this year, no decision had been made Friday on how to make up the days, said Margaret Dean, director of communications.
The Leflore County district’s plans also were up in the air, said Byron Haynes, deputy superintendent: “We have not finalized it, but we are working on that.”
The Carroll County district missed five days, said Superintendent Billy Joe Ferguson.
The Carroll County schools are out on spring break this week. At a special meeting Wednesday, the school board approved adding four days to the end of the district’s calendar.
Classes would normally end on May 21 but now also will be held on May 22 and May 26-28. The district will be closed May 25 for the Memorial Day holiday.
Ferguson said he’s awaiting a determination from the state Board of Education on what to do about the fifth missed day.
One possible solution, he said, would be to extend the hours of instruction on a daily basis — possibly from 2:45 p.m. to 4 p.m. — to ensure that the state’s required number of hours of instruction are met.
J.Z. George High School’s graduation will still be held May 22.
