The First Presbyterian Christmas tree is ready to be decorated by a cast of 100 choir members for the 29th annual Singing Christmas Tree.
“What struck me about the tree the first time I saw all the people on it was how it brings people together,” said Ray Smithee, First Presbyterian’s music director and organist. “It is very Americana.”
This year it will bring together at least 150 people just to put the performance together.
“We have the 100 people who will be on the tree, the ones who build the tree, the costumers, the three kings who will proceed and the sound crew,” Smithee said.
He said the annual Singing Tree brings together the largest percentage of church members for one event.
“It has always been a fun event,” said Connie Black, a member of the choir. “It is nice to think about all the members of the church who have sung over the years.”
The performance will be split into two parts. The first half will include popular secular Christmas songs and will transition into the second portion that will feature more traditional Christmas hymns and the Nativity scene.
“I think it is a great time to take a break from the busyness of the season,” Smithee said.
Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday behind the church’s Education Building at 300 Main St.
Despite predictions of rain, the show will go on. In case of inclement weather, the performance will take place in the sanctuary.
Forecasts call for a 50 percent chance of light rain Monday night, and a chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 40s both nights.
