The town of Sidon has received a $364,500 grant to update and repair its sewage system.
Mayor Johnnie Neal said the Community Development Block Grant from the Mississippi Development Authority will allow Sidon to address some ongoing issues with sewage in the small community just south of Greenwood.
“We will repair some of the main line, replace the pump and possibly build a substation,” said Neal. “In the past when there was a lot of water, we’ve had some overflow.”
The grant comes from the Small Government Public Facilities fund for the state, which funds public improvements such as water, wastewater, drainage, streets and public buildings.
Neal said work on the project will begin immediately and will be completed within a year. “We’re so thankful,” she said. “We’ve applied for this grant several years in a row and finally got it.”
A letter from Gov. Phil Bryant commended the mayor for her application. He said it “demonstrates the town of Sidon’s commitment to addressing the needs of the community. I commend you for this initiative and for helping improve the quality of life in your community.”
The contract for funds is contingent upon environmental clearance, which must be completed within four months of the award date. Neal said arrangements are being made to ensure that getting the work done will be safe for the environment and the surrounding area.
Tommy Gregory of Gregory & Associates of Greenwood assisted with the grant application and will be the administrator of grant funds.
