The Salvation Army is urging people to donate to help those struggling from the health-related and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The organization will hold a #GiveFromHomeDay on Tuesday. The fundraiser will allow people to donate to their local Salvation Army online to fund social services as more people seek help amid job layoffs and furloughs.
Lt. Keisha McMullin, an officer for Greenwood’s Salvation Army, said more people have been requesting services after losing their jobs.
“We are currently assisting with utility bills as well as rent,” McMullin said. “We’ve also been assisting clients with hotel rooms. We have received many calls with clients needing groceries as well.”
As money has gotten tight for many people, McMullin also said there’s been a slight decrease in monetary donations through dropoffs and mail.
Donations of items such as clothing and furniture remain about the same.
The Salvation Army’s retail store has been closed during the pandemic, though the social services department will stay open. There’s a need for monetary donations and canned goods, McMullin said.
To donate money online, go to Give.SalvationArmyALM.org/givefromhome and select the Greenwood Salvation Army location.
A donation may be made as a one-time sum or a monthly allowance. Canned goods may be dropped off in front of The Salvation Army’s retail store, 214 Mississippi 7.
