The Leflore County Board of Supervisors is planning significant upgrades for the Rising Sun community, including extensive street overlaying and improvements to its neighborhood park.
Cora Lowe spoke before the supervisors Monday on behalf of the Rising Sun Community Organization.
Lowe said that the community had been in existence for more than 50 years and that, during that time, “never have the streets been overlaid with the exception of Rising Sun Circle.”
“We’re asking if not all the streets can be overlaid, at least some of them can be,” she said.
Lowe said the community has had to deal with standing water — a breeding ground for mosquitoes — as well as abandoned vehicles.
She also said at Rising Sun Park the lighting isn’t working, nets on the soccer goals need replacing and a portable toilet is needed.
The community will celebrate its “Day in the Park” on June 20. Lowe said it would be nice if the improvements were ready by then.
District 4 Supervisor Wayne Self, who represents Rising Sun, said the county was already planning to overlay the streets in the community. Jerry Smith, the county’s road manager, said the street work will begin soon.
Leflore County Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham said the county plans to build a permanent restroom facility at the park.
He also said he would contact Delta Electric Power Association about the park’s lighting.
In other action, the supervisors approved:
• A resolution honoring the life of Ronnie Robertson, the Delta Electric general manager and former state legislator who died June 3.
• An annual lease for $3,600 between the county and the Browning Progressive Civic League for the park in the Browning Community.
• An annual lease for $841 between the county and Anna Prophet for the park in the Buckeye Community.
