Greenwood and Leflore County’s recycling effort is moving ahead, even though the bins haven’t arrived.
“They are manufacturing the dropoff bins as we speak,” Hart Henson, the recycling coordinator, said Monday.
Permanent outside bins will be placed at the recycling center at the intersection of Commerce Street and Cypress Avenue. For now, collected recyclables are placed in temporary cardboard boxes inside the building.
The hours of the center are not fixed yet, so Henson was uncertain what times of day residents could make dropoffs. “It will have to be when someone is there,” she said.
The phone number is 455-7197.
Recyclables that may be brought in include:
• Aluminum and steel cans (rinsed)
• No. 1 and No. 2 coded plastic bottles (rinsed with caps off)
• Newspaper
• Cardboard, including corrugated cardboard
Henson herself dropped off some recyclables on Friday. She said the bins were ordered last week and were likely to arrive within the next three to four weeks.
The Commerce Street center is only one of several planned dropoff sites. Henson is working on securing additional grant funds to purchase additional bins to be placed throughout the county.
She said the ultimate goal is to offer curbside pickup of recyclables within two years.
Henson said she would be traveling to Oxford today to “shadow” former Greenwood resident Amberlyn Liles, recycling coordinator for Oxford-Leflore County Recycling, to help fine-tune her plan.
At the center, a municipally owned building at 1500 Commerce St., Henson’s office is being readied this week.
The center, originally part of the National Picture & Frame Co. complex, was last occupied by Gossco Inc. in 2006.
