A brief power outage knocked out the lights in much of downtown Greenwood for about an hour this morning.
Larry Griggs, vice president for operations at Greenwood Utilities, said power from the Wright Station substation went down around 8:30 a.m. this morning but was restored within an hour.
The substation supplies power to about 1,200 customers, covering much of downtown, Griggs said.
“While we were upgrading some relay equipment at Wright sub, there was a switching error that occurred,” Griggs said. “We had it up and running again in about an hour. We’re good to go now.”
Griggs said workers were initially unsure what the cause of the outage was but were able to switch some customers over to other substations and restore power while they continued to diagnose the problem.
Electricity was restored to all customers by about 9:30 a.m., Griggs said.
Among the locations that lost power this morning were Greenwood City Hall and the adjacent police and fire stations.
Greenwood Assistant Fire Chief John Lewis said police and fire services were unaffected, though.
“We have emergency generators, which kicked right in,” he said.
