In two unrelated arrests Thursday, the Greenwood Police Department seized more than three pounds of marijuana.
Both busts came after police chased two different individuals after attempted to stop their vehicles for traffic violations.
Reginald Washington, 38, address not available, was arrested after police chased him for about two miles down U.S. 49 South.
After Washington finally came to a stop, officers found approximately two pounds of high-grade marijuana in his vehicle, according to a press release from the Greenwood Police Department.
Washington was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, a felony, and was released on $15,000 bond. According to police, Washington is currently on probation with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
In a separate incident early Thursday afternoon, police arrested Dietrich Brooks, 34, 2708 Blair Circle after he led officers on a car chase through several residential neighborhoods in South Greenwood.
A Greenwood police officer initially pulled Brooks over on Bowie Lane near Broad Street on a routine traffic stop. After stopping Brooks, the officer noticed the strong smell of marijuana coming from the car, Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore said.
“When officers tried to question him, he took off,” Moore said.
Officers gave chase, Moore said, and “finally got him stopped on Carver Street near Bowie Lane after zig-zagging in and out of residential areas. Once the vehicle stopped, Brooks got out and ran and they had to chase him down.”
Inside the vehicle, police seized about one pound of marijuana and $1,100 in cash.
Brooks was charged with eight different traffic violations as well as the more serious charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, felony evading and felony possession of marijuana.
As of Saturday, Brooks was being held at the Leflore County Jail. Bond had been set at $27,650.
According to Moore, Brooks is currently out on parole with the Mississippi Department of Corrections following a previous conviction. Moore said MDOC had been contacted but was unsure if state authorities intended to revoke Brooks’ parole.
In a separate incident, another former convict out on probation was arrested Thursday on charges of auto burglary.
Moore said Telvin K. Tabor, 24, 804 Walthall St., Apt. B was arrested Thursday evening after police linked him with an auto break-in at the corner of Market and Fulton streets earlier that morning.
The chief said Tabor, who was on probation with the Department of Corrections for a previous auto burglary, admitted to authorities that he took several hundred dollars from the vehicle.
“We actually recovered about $180 of the money that he’d taken,” Moore said. “He admitted to spending $175 of it.”
