Earl and Opal Pickles have been married for more than 50 years. They appear in some 900 newspapers around the world.
Today, they make their debut on the comics page of the Commonwealth.
“Pickles,” created by award-winning cartoonist Brian Crane, shows the funny side of family and friends. Earl and Opal share their golden years with their 30-something daughter, Sylvia, her husband, Dan, and grandson, Nelson. A dense dog, Roscoe, and a cynical cat, Muffin, also add to the laughs coming out of the Pickles’ household.
“Whether observing the differences between genders and generations or taking a wry but sympathetic look at life in the twilight years, Crane’s good-natured wit and dry humor are sure to please readers of all ages,” says the Washington Post Writers Group, which syndicates the column.
Crane, a former art director for an advertising agency, began devoting his full professional attention to “Pickles” soon after the comic strip debuted in 1990. In 2013, Crane won cartooning’s highest honor, The Reuben Award for “Cartoonist of the Year.” Crane lives near Reno, Nevada, with his wife, Diana. He’s the father of seven and grandfather of 13.
“Pickles” takes the place of “Mike du Jour” on the Commonwealth’s weekday comics lineup.
