Kevin Steward says he enjoys dealing with customers at Jimmy Jazz Sneakers and Clothing and plans to continue working in that field.
Steward, 34, is a lifelong Greenwood resident. He graduated from Amanda Elzy High School in 2001 and attended Mississippi Valley State University for a time before taking a job at Viking Range.
He spent about four years at Viking and about the same amount of time at John-Richard, another Greenwood manufacturer. He started in his current job last August after being recruited for it while working at Pure Air.
He had worked at the store before under different ownership when it was named Okun’s, and he said working in sales is a good fit: “I’m a people person anyway.”
“Years ago, I used to help a friend out at his detail shop, so I’m used to dealing with the public and everything,” he added. “So it wasn’t a big transition for me.”
He works five-day weeks for 40-plus hours a week, including every other Sunday. He said it didn’t take long to learn what he needed to be assistant manager for the store, which has six employees.
“If you’ve got the merchandise and you know what the people want, it’s pretty much real easy,” he said.
One day, he hopes to have a clothing store of his own.
As for hobbies, he said, “Most of the time I’m either detailing cars or shooting pool.”
He also plays softball with the Downtown Sluggers, mostly as an outfielder, and spends time with his family.
He and his wife, Stephanie, have been married for four years.
He also has a number of other relatives in town, including his mother, grandmother and sister as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He has one brother, who lives in Georgia.
