NORTH CARROLLTON — The Carroll County Recreation Park board will have a fundraising festival on Oct. 30 at the park to make money to light the last of four fields, according to park director Cary Wayne Moore.
Currently only three fields have lights. The lack of lights makes scheduling a large number of teams difficult, Moore said.
The festival will begin at 4 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. There is a $2 gate charge, and various games and activities will be available for children as well as adults.
“We are inviting several local bands to play. We want people to come out and have a good time. We are selling tickets for both barbecued chicken and pulled pork plates,” he said.
People can purchase tickets for the food plates at the field or from a number of individuals who will have them, Moore said.
Moore said due to the large number of teams now playing, the fourth field is sorely needed for nighttime play.
“When the county built the field, they only lit three of the fields, which they thought was enough, but now we have 17 teams playing, with ages ranging from three to 12,” Moore said.
“We hold tournaments most weekends. We’ve had teams from Arkansas, from Atlanta, Dothan, Alabama, Laurel, Columbus and Greenville.”
In addition, the J.Z. George High School softball and baseball teams use the fields for their home games, as do various traveling teams, he said.
The recreation league has also teamed with Winona Recreation League to work together in the ’82 Challenge Champions, Moore said, and has agreed to be able to use each other’s fields when there is an overflow.
