The Greenwood School Board on Wednesday approved a resolution asking the city to levy the same taxes for funding the district during this school year as for the last.
The board’s president, Deirdre Mayes, during a special called board meeting, said “no increase in taxes has been requested.”
The district’s 2018-19 budget of $31 million is funded by local, state and federal tax dollars.
In other business, the board approved advertising for a request for proposals for professional services over the 2018-19 school year.
Board member Randy Clark asked to amend the motion to approve with a request that providers of services provide proof of general liability insurance of $1 million per occurrence, including coverage for abuse and molestation, and business automobile liability insurance, also at $1 million per occurrence. The board approved the amended motion.
The board briefly discussed progress on the replacement of roofs at Bankston Elementary and Greenwood High schools, where roofers are working at night under high-power lights to avoid disturbing classes during the day.
Personnel items were discussed, including costs for various training, certification for long-term substitute teachers, requests for special one-year licenses from the Mississippi Department of Education, a conference attended by pre-K and kindergarten teachers and a modest compensation to be paid to employees who act as mentors to new district teachers.
A meet-and-greet for new teachers is scheduled for Aug. 30 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Greenwood Middle School.
Wilson told the board that on average, classes at Greenwood schools have 20 to 22 students in each classroom, but one class at Bankston is approaching the capacity of 27 students to one teacher, and another class might have to be created.
The board’s next regular board meeting, open to the public, will be held on Sept. 13 at 5 p.m.
