CARROLLTON — Vaiden-area residents will soon have easier access to medical care when University of Mississippi Medical Center opens a clinic there at the end of September.
The Carroll County Board of Supervisors heard an update on the progress of the clinic Tuesday. It will be staffed and run by Jackson-based UMMC, which will rent the building from Carroll County.
The county has been responsible for putting the building, formerly used by Mallory Clinic, in good condition. Mallory Clinic moved to Lexington, leaving the building vacant.
“They hope to have a ribbon cutting on Sept. 21,” board Vice President Terry Herbert said, adding that they were waiting on furniture.
The board also accepted a quote from Nu Era Pest Control of $50 monthly for a one-time pest control application to the clinic.
Beat 4 Supervisor Claude Fluker asked whether the clinic would be included in county buildings when a new bidding process combines them all into one contract. Beat 5 Supervisor Ricky Corley said it will, although he is not sure whether UMMC would handle its own pest control.
The board also heard from Dr. Bernard Taylor on behalf of the Carrollton Pilgrimage Committee. Taylor requested that the county contribute $1,000 to help support the Pilgrimage and Pioneer Day Festival, as it has done in the past.
“We usually get a grant from Mississippi Arts Commission, but this year our application was denied on a technicality,” he said.
The board voted 4-0 to contribute $1,000. The festival and Pilgrimage will be held the first weekend in October.
In other business, the board:
• Discussed a report by Carey W. Moore, recreation park director, that tools needed for maintenance of the park were stolen. The deductible on the county’s insurance is $5,000, Herbert said.
Sheriff Jerry Carver said the parking lot at the park in North Carrollton is always unlocked, but the shop area is always locked, although someone could go around in the creek, which can’t be fenced. He also said the Winona park was robbed the same night.
“They need to make a list of what they’ve got to have to finish out the season,” Herbert told George Johnson.
• Announced that a public hearing on the county budget will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Carrollton courthouse.
• Agreed to postpone discussion of a resignation letter from Johnson, who has asked to be relieved of his post as president of the recreation park commission. Corley asked Johnson to wait until the election season was complete, and he agreed.
• Heard from Dell Gordon about a garbage bill for more than $400 that he said he doesn’t owe. “I am an entertainer. I go wherever my agent tells me to go. There’s no garbage there,” he said.
Fluker said he had been watching, and no garbage was ever picked up. The board voted unanimously to negate the bill.
• Accepted a low quote of $13,100 for a pipe for County Road 405. Board attorney Kevin Horan said it was not necessary to vote to accept the quote, since the board had already voted on the project, and it is assumed the board will get two quotes and take the lower one.
• Approved billing for relocation and adjustment of lines by Delta Electric Power Association on a project in the amount of $5,474. This amount will be reimbursed from State Aid funds, Shane p of Willis Engineering told the board.
• Approved the payment to Wellington Associates of $5,305 for an accident and sickness policy for volunteer firemen. The money will be paid for out of fire funds, board clerk Sugar Mullins said.
