The Leflore County Board of Supervisors approved a final payment for the Leflore County Civic Center’s new roof.
Now the county will have to pay approximately $40,000 more to stop leaks at the Civic Center.
The board agreed Wednesday to pay Independent Roofing of Jackson $49,500 as the final installment of its contract to replace the Civic Center’s roof. The project was done in 2011.
The total cost of the new roof was $285,000.
The Civic Center is still experiencing leaks, but that’s not the new roof’s fault, architect David Mann told supervisors.
Mann, who works for Dale and Associates Architects of Jackson, said the problem was ductwork in on the roof, especially around air-conditioning units on the roof. He said the sealing of the ductwork has deteriorated, causing the leaks.
He said sealing the ductwork was not part of what Independent Roofing was hired to do.
“The roof is fine ... and you have a 20-year warranty on it,” Mann said. “Generally, a roofer doesn’t get involved with a ductwork mechanical problem.”
Mann estimated ductwork repairs will cost $40,000.
Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham said the county will solicit bids on the ductwork project.
In other action, the board:
• Approved payments of $331,420.97 to Malouf Construction and $1,000 to architect Richard Dickson for their work on the new peanut warehouse built for Clint Williams Co. in the Greenwood-Leflore Industrial Park.
Dickson praised Malouf for finishing the $2.5 million building under a tight deadline.
“I want to say this was an extremely trying project,” Dickson said. “Not many contractors could have done what Malouf did in completing this project.”
• Agreed to allow Keesler-Hamrick-Gilliespie American Legion Post 29 to fly U.S. flags used at veterans’ funerals on the flagpole at the Leflore County Courthouse for seven days. Abraham said the flags are too large to be flown on the post’s flagpole.
• Accepted a Homeland Security grant of $16,000.
• Approved the rehiring of Wendolyn Payne as an E911 dispatcher at the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department.
• Gave AT&T permission to put a line through County Road 112.
