A Mississippi Valley State University professor and student were representing the school today at the annual Higher Education Appreciation Day Working for Excellence at the Legislature.
Assistant Professor of Mathematics Candace Carter-Stevens and senior math and computer science major Henry Akaeze were chosen, respectively, as the outstanding faculty member and outstanding student from Valley for the 31st HEADWAE program in Jackson.
Each year, HEADWAE honors a faculty member and student from each participating member institution of the Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities. The program was established by the Legislature to honor academically talented students and faculty members who have made outstanding contributions in promoting academic excellence.
Akaeze, a native of Nigeria, said in a university-released statement that he was grateful to have been chosen.
“I owe to Valley, especially the Mathematics, Computer and Information Sciences Department, for the scholar I have become over the last four years,” he said. “I dedicate the award to my parents, who are watching from up above, and to everyone who has helped me get to where I am today. I am very grateful.”
Carter-Stevens, a Cleveland native, said she is grateful and humbled as well but deferred to her students.
“This award is not about me,” she said. “It’s about our amazing students at MVSU. The students motivate and inspire me to continue to learn and refine my teaching to become a more efficient and effective educator.”
Along with honorees from around the state, Carter-Stevens and Akaeze were to be recognized by lawmakers and given a tour of the Capitol. An awards luncheon was to follow, with Gov. Phil Bryant delivering the keynote address.
