A woman was taken by ambulance to Greenwood Leflore Hospital this morning after a five-car pileup shortly before 8 a.m.
“She was taken to the hospital complaining of pain,” said Greenwood Police Department Lt. Talisha Lewis, who worked the wreck along with Patrolman Jon Summerville. “We didn't see any blood. I think she was just shook up pretty bad, scared.”
Cars were backed up for more than half a mile in the west-bound lane of U.S. 82 for roughly 30 minutes as Greenwood police and the Mississippi Highway Patrol attended to the wreck. The accident occurred, in a slow mist of rain, at the intersection just passed the Cannon Chevrolet-Cadillac-Nissan dealership where County Road 145 intersects with U.S. 82.
“I really don't know what happened,” said Deepanshu Chhabra, a senior at Pillow Academy who was riding to school with Miles McBee, also a senior. “The car in front of us slammed on brakes and swerved, so we did, too. The next thing I know, people's cars are getting hit everywhere.”
According to Summerville, a blue Chevrolet Tahoe traveling west “came up too fast” on a gray Jeep Cherokee. The driver of the Tahoe swerved, trying to miss the Cherokee, but hit it anyway. The Cherokee was sent into a spin, smashing into a black Nissan Altima. The Altima hit the rear corner of a broken-down gray and blue Chevrolet Suburban that was parked in the emergency lane.
When the Tahoe initially swerved, it also hit a tan Dodge Neon, which in turn hit another vehicle.
“The sixth car apparently left the scene of the accident,” said Summerville.
The police pieced together the accident details by talking to a witness who works at Pillow.
The driver of the Neon was taken to the hospital and also ticketed for no insurance. The driver of the Suburban, Patricia Majic, was also given a ticket for no insurance.
“We're both fine. We're not hurt. We were on our way to school,” said Chhabra, a passenger in the Cherokee driven by McBee. “But I don't know if we are going now.”
Other than the driver of the Neon, no injuries were reported.
All other drivers left the scene on their own as the vehicles were towed away.
