VAIDEN – Students at Marshall Elementary School will receive 25 new computers to replace the ones in their lab, and J.Z. George High School will get three new SMART Boards.
The items are part of a plan the Carroll County School Board approved Thursday for using federal money that will go to the district.
Board President Laura Davis said she had visited schools and was very impressed with the tools teachers are using.
“The technology is amazing,” Davis said. “Parents should come and see.”
Members also discussed and questioned where various repair and construction projects in the district would come from and voted to have the funding for the projects come from district construction funds rather than maintenance.
One of the projects is a canopy at Marshall Elementary School for students boarding buses. “The canopy looks nice, and the kids won’t get wet,” Davis said.
Kenneth DeLoach made the motion to take the funds from the construction account, Rubye Miller made the second and the motion passed 4-0.
The board also accepted donations of $500 from Wal-Mart for George Middle School and a car from the town of North Carrollton.
In other business the board:
nAccepted the retirement announcement of Mary Liddell, drug education coordinator.
nHeard a report by Superintendent Billy Joe Ferguson that showed student achievement has increased since the beginning of the school year.
nCommended Marcus Jackson, a former J.Z. George outstanding track athlete, for his achievements as a five-time All-American athlete. Jackson is a junior at Mississippi State University, and his high jump of 7 feet 6 inches was second in the nation at the indoor meet.
