A traveling exhibit from the Mississippi Art Colony is on display at the Museum of the Mississippi Delta in time for holiday viewing.
Visitors to the museum, including children, can see the Mississippi Art Colony exhibit as well as the 2017 Christmas trees on display in the museum’s front galleries for free, Monday through Saturday, except during holiday closing periods this Saturday-Monday and Jan. 1.
The 26 paintings in the traveling exhibit represent juried work of artists who attended the five-day fall session of Mississippi Art Colony.
Each year, the colony, located at Henry S. Jacobs Camp near Utica, hosts two sessions — one in the spring and one in the fall — during which artists paint all day for five days.
From these sessions, paintings are juried, winners selected and two shows, one representing each session, travel throughout the state.
This year’s fall exhibit features everything from traditional realist landscapes to abstract compositions incorporating textured objects on the canvas.
Several interpretations of familiar Delta scenes are represented, including Elke Briuer’s impressionistic “Delta Trees,” Sherry Phillips Carson’s “Old Rusty Glider,” and John Armistead’s “Haven of Rest.”
All works in the show are for sale with prices marked.
The Mississippi Art Colony was organized in 1948 as the Allison Wells Art Colony in Way. The colony relocated several times until settling at the Henry S. Jacobs Camp in 1973.
The Jacobs Camp is about 20 miles south of Jackson in a rural setting with cabins, a painting pavilion, dining and meeting halls, nature trails and a lake.
Visiting artist/instructors teach during the five-day sessions and serve as jurors for the two annual traveling exhibits.
The Christmas trees in the museum’s main gallery and entryway were all decorated by community organizations and businesses with specially themed ornaments. The tree exhibit will be up until Jan. 3.
The Mississippi Art Colony show runs through February 2018.
