Samantha Milton, a longtime teacher and a mother of two, said she was looking forward to gaining a new perspective on education after joining the Greenwood School Board for the first time Tuesday.
Milton, who was confirmed by the Greenwood City Council for a five-year term last week, was sworn in as a member of the board by Board Attorney Carlos Palmer at the beginning of Tuesday’s meeting.
A teacher in the Leflore County School District since 2000, Milton is also the mother of two — a current student at Greenwood High School and a 2013 GHS graduate who's currently a sophomore at Mississippi Valley State University. She said her background as a teacher and as a mother should help her add perspective and experience to the board.
“I think because I’m an educator, I can add a little flavor to the board,” Milton said after Tuesday’s meeting. “I’m very invested in the boys and girls of Greenwood and Leflore County.”
Milton was nominated by Mayor Carolyn McAdams to take the place of Lora Evans, who resigned from the board in July.
Milton’s swearing-in brings the board back up to a full five members. It had been operating with just four since Evans’ resignation.
Milton said she’s excited to help take on some of the challenges facing the board and was looking forward to spending the next few weeks getting up to speed on district business.
A native of Memphis, Milton previously worked as an assistant teacher at the University of Memphis Campus School. She moved to Greenwood in 1994 after marrying Kenneth Milton, who teaches in music department at Mississippi Valley State University.
An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated how many children Milton currently has in the Greenwood School District and incorrectly stated the year she moved to Greenwood.
