A Christmas party is being planned for Friday for the kids who attend the Greenwood Mentoring Group’s Learning Center.
The party, aided in large part by the Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood, is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the center, located at 200 Ave. G.
Bill Clay, founder of the mentoring group, said the efforts of the Junior Auxiliary are appreciated not only by the 25 to 30 kids who attend the center on a daily basis but also by the volunteers who make the center run.
Aimee Dunn, chairwoman of the auxiliary’s mentoring outreach efforts, said it’s part of the group’s commitment to the greater community.
“We’re trying to become more involved. We’ve sponsored different parties this year,” she said.
Clay said Dunn arranged the recently held Drive 4UR Community event in partnership with Kirk Brothers Ford-Lincoln.
That daylong event, held on Oct. 24, yielded a $6,000 check for the mentoring group from Ford Motor Co. earlier this month.
In addition, the Junior Auxiliary’s provisional class last year made the Greenwood Mentoring Group its project. “They provided them with all the supplies they needed,” Dunn said.
Clay said the Junior Auxiliary’s efforts have been phenomenal.
“When we need something, the next thing you know, it’s there on the doorstep,” he said.
“They are year-round givers.”
The Christmas party will provide winter coats for the kids who need them. The Junior Auxiliary has done a good job in getting sleeping bags and other needed gifts lined up, Clay said.
Dunn said she’d like to see the coat program continue beyond the holidays. “We can keep getting coats and meet the needs of kids as they come in,” she said.
The Junior Auxiliary is also providing food for the party and helping with its staffing.
Tax-deductible donations may be sent to Greenwood Mentoring Group, 200 Ave. G, Greenwood, MS 38930.
