Several Greenwood natives are returning to their hometown to share their perspectives and experiences of success during a gathering Friday at the Greenwood Mentoring Group’s headquarters.

The Mentoring Group, which offers an after-school program during school months and enrichment activities throughout the year, is hosting the event, which will be for young men ages 10-18.
The program will begin at 5 p.m. at 124 Ave. G. The public is invited at no charge.
The panel of speakers will be U.S. Army Lt. Col. Shan Lymon; Carlos Emmons, an entrepreneur and former NFL linebacker; Dr. Edward Jordan, an educator; and Terrance Course, who is retired from the military and is a portfolio management specialist for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
All four grew up in Greenwood and graduated from Greenwood High School.
“Our generation of children — you have to show them. It’s not about telling them anything,” said Bill Clay, Mentoring Group director.
“I think to have four young men that have gone out and done great things — that is a testimony to tell you, ‘Look, pay attention to what your elders say. Be a good student not only in the classroom but in life. Value education, value respect and hard work.’’
Course initially came up with the idea after he and Lymon talked about their time in Greenwood. They thought it might be beneficial to share their stories, he said.
Course, who lives in Carrollton, said he plans on discussing the importance of education, obedience, accountability and responsibility.
Lymon, who lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts recently finished a U.S. Army War College Fellowship at Tufts University.
“It’s our turn to come back home and tell our story,” he said.
Each speaker has an area of expertise, and Lymon’s is leadership. He said he will explain that leaders are made not born.
“I understand leadership, the art of leadership, but also the character of leadership,” Lymon said.
Other topics will be education, business success and civic duty.
Clay has asked for advance reservations for seats by 12 p.m. Friday. Call 466-0500 for a reservation.
