The Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market will officially be open for business again beginning Saturday morning.
The market will be located in the parking lot at the corner of Howard and Johnson streets. Vendors and buyers are invited to come out every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon until the season’s end on Sept. 30.
Beth Stevens, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce, said that customers can expect a variety of items throughout the summer.
Plums, peaches, blueberries and figs are just a few of the fruits that Stevens said would be available at the market. As for vegetables, be on the lookout for squash, cucumber, eggplant, corn, peppers and “just about any bean you could think of,” said Stevens.
The market also has a brand- new item that’s already causing some excitement. This Saturday there will be whole and chocolate milk for sale. This will be the first time that the market has offered dairy.
Another new thing that will be at the market on Saturday is a “plant swap.” The plan is for people to leave their homes with one plant and return home with a different one, said Stevens.
A local garden club has done most of the coordinating for the event. The market will use trial and error to determine if the plant swap is something that should be continued, Stevens said.
Hart Henson, executive director of ArtPlace, plans to host “Art at the Market” from 9 to 11 a.m. nearly every weekend. Henson said she will showcase the work of local artists and provide free arts activities.
People of all ages are welcome to join in the festivities, Henson said. She plans to bring to the market everything from culinary training to pottery and painting.
A different artist will be showcased every weekend. Saturday’s special guest is C.J. Coleman, a local artist specializing in pottery and fused glass. Coleman will be doing a pottery wheel demonstration.
Henson thanked the City of Greenwood for the generous contributions that have made Art at the Market possible.
