The Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market is set to open Saturday morning, and all local vendors are still welcome to join in on the action.
The market is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday mornings through September. It will be held in the parking lot behind the old C&G Depot at the corner of Howard and Johnson streets.
Market manager Tommy Miller said he believes the recent salmonella scare will help to draw more people to the locally grown tomatoes and other produce at the market.
“I really think it’s going to be a tremendous asset to us. Locally grown produce is clean and pure … Everything is looking good for us,” Miller said.
He said it is a little early to find many ripe tomatoes in this area, but some items shoppers might find at the farmers market Saturday morning will include beans, beets, cabbage, squash, corn and herbs, as well as baked and canned goods.
Organizers said they expect to have at least eight vendors set up for opening day, but anyone with produce to sell is welcome to come on Saturday morning.
The fees are $5 for vendors who provide their own tables or pick-up trucks, or $10 to rent one of the market’s 10-foot-by-10-foot pop-up tents for the day.
Miller said they hope to have live music for the opening and draw a large crowd.
“We’re looking forward to a good time. You’ll get to visit with your neighbors, the vendors and people from all over, really. We have lots of community support,” Miller said.
