Thursday’s Greenwood-Leflore Area Job Fair will bring more together more than 20 employers from across the state looking for those ready and willing to work.
The job fair will be held in the Leflore County Civic Center. Doors will open at 9 a.m., and the event concludes at 2 p.m.
“There is a lot of talent in this community,” said Angela Curry, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Economic Development Foundation. “There are quite a few jobs available in the community. This is a great opportunity to take advantage of those opportunities.”
The Governor’s Job Fair Network and the foundation collaborated to make the fair happen. As of Friday, 21 employers were to to be represented, Curry said. Some are based in the Greenwood area, such as Greenwood Leflore Hospital, Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp. and Cannon Motor Co. Others, such as Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding and Baxter Healthcare Inc., are based in other parts of the state.
“They cover everything from health-care-related to service jobs to manufacturing,” Curry said.
The job fair, the second-to-last scheduled for the year, gives people a greater chance to find a job than just looking at one or two businesses at a time, she said.
“This provides a unique outlet for business and industry. It is an opportunity for job seekers to interact with potential employers. It also provides employers the opportunity to meet and interview a variety of potential employees,” Curry said.
The state Department of Veterans Affairs/Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment will also be on hand to answer questions about veterans’ benefits, as will the state Department of Rehabilitation Services.
Representatives from Antonelli College, Mississippi Delta Community College, Mississippi State University, will provide information on educational opportunities.
Curry recommends that each job seeker bring a current résumé. Also, she said, “dress as if you were coming for an interview — because we have some employers who will be hiring that day.”
The WIN Job Center mobile unit will be on site to assist applicants with completing or updating their résumés if needed.
The job fair participating employers include:
- Greenwood Leflore Hospital
- Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding
- Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp.
- State Department of Human Services/Family and Children Services
- Mississippi Army National Guard
- Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs
- Primerica Financial Services
Curry said more job fairs should be held in Greenwood.
“There’s a need for a job fair. Our residents have asked for a job fair. We hope they take advantage of it,” she said.
