An Itta Bena man has been charged with murder in the shooting of a man who was found dead in his vehicle on Sept. 15.
Jarrett Griggs, 20, 202 Rainey Alley, has been in the Leflore County Jail since Sept. 16 on unrelated contempt of court charges. On Wednesday, Griggs was formally charged with murder in the death of Christopher Cross.
Bond was set at $200,000. Other charges relating to the shooting are pending, Itta Bena Police Chief Robert Kirklin said.
Cross, 31, 111 Nelson St., a construction worker with Gene Bidwell Construction Co., was found shot once in the back in his Chevrolet Tahoe early on the morning of Sept. 15. The vehicle was parked at the intersection of Roosevelt and Douglas streets.
The chief said eyewitness testimony was largely responsible for the murder charge, although he did say some physical evidence collected from the crime scene was linked to Griggs.
Kirklin said the investigation into the shooting of Cross will likely result in more arrests.
The chief has said he was considering charging at least four other individuals as accessories in the case as well as two uncooperative witnesses.
The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are assisting Kirklin’s department in the case.
