Tyree Irving cruised to an easy re-election to the state Court of Appeals Tuesday.
Irving won with nearly 67 percent of the vote over Ceola James. The former Greenwood attorney did even better in his native Leflore County, winning 75 percent of the votes.
The contest between Irving and James, an attorney and former chancellor from Vicksburg, was relatively low-key.
Irving touted his experience. He has served on the Appeals Court for nearly 12 years. He was first elected in 1998. Before that, he practiced law in Greenwood.
“I think that the electorate overall recognized that without a doubt I was the most qualified person with 12 years on the court and there was just no reason to remove me,” Irving said. “I always felt that I would win, but when you have an opponent, you can never be sure.”
