A gold medal winner in senior horseshoe competitions at both the state and national level is coming to Carroll County on Saturday afternoon to demonstrate his skills in the horseshoe pit.
Frank Dotson of Jackson, who has competed in the Mississippi Senior Games, where he won a gold medal, and at the Summer National Seniors Game, was invited to Carroll County by a friend, Raymond K. Sanders of Greenwood.
Greenwood architect Charles Bowman, at whose lakeside retreat the public demonstration will be held, said he has prepared a 40-foot regulation horseshoe court in advance of the event.
The court is a challenge for those who compete in informal events.
“I’m not very good at it,” said Bowman, who is experienced with non-regulation 30-foot pits.
The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association of America, which holds national world championship tournaments annually, was founded in 1926.
Bowman said he expects 25 to 30 people to come to his retreat, which is on Mississippi 17, 1.7 miles south of the U.S. 82 interchange and two miles south of Carrollton.
Visitors should turn left at the first four-way stop intersection and follow the signs to his place.
The hourlong demonstration will be followed by a barbecue chicken dinner at 5 p.m.
