Cottonlandia Museum’s latest art exhibit, “Honoring: William Dunlap,” will debut Monday and remain on display through April 29.
The public is invited to come meet the artist at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. March 22 at Cottonlandia. Refreshments will be served.
A native of Webster County, Dunlap is known for his sculptures and vibrant landscape paintings, which depict mainly fictional scenes and places. He refers to himself as a “hypothetical realist.”
Dunlap holds a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi and has distinguished himself over the past three decades as an artist, commentator and educator. He currently maintains studios in McLean, Va., Coral Gables, Fla., and Mathiston.
Several of Dunlap’s pieces can be seen at The Alluvian. His work also can be found in collections at various galleries around the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson.
“It’s a pretty big show for us … He’s a big deal, so for us to get him, we’re very excited,” said Jennifer Whites, Cottonlandia’s art and education coordinator.
Whites said Jess Pinkston, a close friend of Dunlap’s, arranged the exhibit at the museum. Dunlap has connections to several Cottonlandia board members and has donated pieces to the museum for fundraising auctions in the past.
Most of the artwork featured in the show will be pieces already owned by several Greenwood residents.
Cottonlandia Museum is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free.
