Shoppers were out in droves early today to snap up bargains in everything from home appliances to footwear.
“We’ve been crazy. It’s just now starting to slow down a little,” Jamie Underwood, manager of the Greenwood J.C. Penney, said this morning.
More than 200 people lined up outside the store waiting for it to open. Officially, the store was set to open at 6 a.m., but customers began filing in at around 5:50.
Dorothy Seals of Moorhead was one of the first to the checkout counter with a number of small kitchen appliances that had been specially marked for quick sale.
“This is what I want the most,” Seals said.
Underwood said those kitchen appliances, which included everything from electric griddles to coffee makers, proved to be very popular.
“All of the cookware was gone within minutes,” she said.
Other hot items included colored “skinny” jeans and ladies boots, Underwood said.
Sears, which opened at 4 a.m., also had steady crowds, said Marvin Jackson, the manager. Customers seemed to be focused on large appliances, he said.
Mike Goldberg, owner of Conerly’s Performance Sports, said sales there were brisk, too.
“We’ve been very active,” he said.
At Walmart, which began a third round of pre-Christmas sales at 5 a.m., David Martin was busy taking home a 50-inch flat-screen television.
“This was a bargain,” he said.
